Photopolymer Etching

Cardiff Print Workshop

Crow Silhouette Tree

I made this print at Cardiff Print Workshop in April. This is an image of a Crow I fed in Bute Park for 4 years.

I did a lot of Photographic Etching (a similar process) on my MA but had not tried Photopolymer Etching. Our Tutor was Bill Chambers who is very knowledgable and helpful. I was first shown how to make a transparency from the photo I had and then transfer this onto a printing plate.

The transparency was placed face down onto the photopolymer plate which has a light sensitive emulsion coating. It was then placed inside the plate making machine which has a UV exposure unit.  Bill also demonstrated inking the plate and how to register the plate on the printing press (images below)

I was very pleased with my print, I also used the same image for a Cyanotype (also made at Cardiff Print Workshop).

I really enjoyed this one day course and would thoroughly recommend any of the courses at CPW.
